Crossville was established in 1870. It was known as Copeland's Bridge. James Copeland built the first bridge in the area. The name change could have been for a couple of reasons. Either it was renamed to Crossville in 1914 in honor of Mr. Cross (a local resident) or it was named for the many crossroads in the area at the time. The post office was established in 1870 by James Copeland. A.C. Copeland was the first Postmaster, holding the position for 28 years. The first families to settle in the area included: Justice, Jones, Roden, Bryant, Allen, Copeland, and Clayton. Early establishments included a hotel in 1916 and a pressing shop1927. The first bank was established in 1914. N.W. Black was the President and Boyce Rains was the cashier. Sand Mountain Lodge No. 320 K. of P. was organized in November of 1920 at Crossville. |
