The first families to settle in Asbury were the Isbells and the Findley family.

Some important people who helped shape the community evolved around the school itself. Elijah Miller Isbell started the first Asbury school, which was called Isbell School at the time. All the Isbell children attended there.

A.L. Isbell was one of the most widely known doctors in the history of Marshall county and the surrounding areas. Dr. Isbell practiced in the Albertville area for more than 50 years, during which time he delivered more than 5,000 babies.

John Birdwell Isbell was one of Alabama’s leading attorneys.

The Jenkins family also had a great turn out from their family after their children attended Isbell school. 6 of the children became medical doctors and 1 became a pharmacist.

The Isbell school was the first one to be established in this area. The school was located approximately 1 mile south of the present day school house. It was located near the forks of Shoal Creek and was discontinued in the late 1890’s.
