The post office was established in 1887.

The first families in the area included:  Dr. W.I. Wright, W.G. Ward, Jeff Fencher,  W.F. Darby, J.J Cochran, L.B. Lackey, William A. Small and  B.C. Wright.

Dawson School was established sometime prior to 1900.  By 1908 the school had 175 local and boarding students.

Located on the second floor of the school house was the I.W.O.O.F. Lodge No. 134.
