Established by M.M. Dutton who persuaded the US Postal Department to establish a post office.

The origin of the name is from the original post-master M.M. Dutton. A pioneer settler that built the first store 1 mile NW of the present town.

Some of the first families to establish a settlement in this area were J.J. Smalley, Tom Gullatt, J.W. Bailey, G.W. White and sons. Uncle Mike McGinn was the oldest know settler to this area. He died in 1886 from a lightening strike. He was a very aged man at that time.

M.M. Dutton, Marion and Jim Dutton are some of the people that help shape the community. “Rufus A. and Will Nichols were early settlers. They reared large families…” from History of Jackson County p.182.

One of the early doctors was Dr. Mason.

The first school was established in 1886 one mile SE of the present school. It was a log school-house 30x50 ft with an open fireplace, one window, and 2 doors. The school was nicknamed the “briar patch” due to the fact that the school was surrounded by briars and woods.

Marion and Jim Dutton owned the first store and opened the first cotton gin.
