Flat Rock was established in 1907.

The city's name originated from a local creek which has a flat rock bottom.

The first post office was named Kosh.  After the first school was opened, the town changed its name to Flat Rock.

Some of the first families to settle in the area were:  Partons, Hogues, Rogers, Burkhalter, Austin, Rainey, Hardy, and Kenimer.
