Henagar was established in 1855 and incorporated as a city in 1965.

Owen Henegar and J.M. Moore opened the first general store shortly after 1855 and was then given the name Henegar.  The spelling of the name is still somewhat disputed (Henagar and Henegar).

Some of the first families to settle in the area were:  J.M. Moore and Owen Henegar.

Hugh H. Kerby and Owen Henegar helped establish the first post office.

Among the early doctors to the area were: Dr. Cecil Vaughn, Dr. Pinkney Ingram, Dr. Eugene Phillips, Dr. M.W. Hawkins(Dentist), Dr. M.L. Casey, Dr. Paul Simpson, Dr. Chastine, Dr. Contrell, Dr. Graves, and Dr. Lovejoy who was a druggist. 

The first drug store was opened by Griff Horton and O.P. Williams in 1936.

Some notable events in the early years were:  In 1938, the Northeast Alabama Bus Company opened in Henegar.  The first telephone system, owned by Mr. Henry Bell, opened in 1910.
