Rainsville was established sometime prior to 1907. It was named after Will Rains. E.E. McCurdy ( "Uncle Ed") was the commissioner. He established the current state highways through Rainsville (Hwy 35 & Hwy 75). He was also responsible for the location of several businesses in the area including Farmer's Telephone Co-Op. Will Rains built the first store in the area which later became the first school house. Some of the first families to settle in the area were: Dawson, Robertson, Thompson and Parker. When the Chavies and Rainsville Schools were consolidated no one knew what city to name the new school after until a worker standing atop the partially constructed building stated that both communities were in "plain view". That is believed to be the origin of the current school's name.
