| This small town located at the top of Sand mountain up the road from Scottsboro, was established before the civil war. The name didn’t come into effect until February 15, 1897. Among the first families to establish settlement here were those of Thomas Galloway, Joe Beesley, William Gossett, Soloman Easley, James Galloway, and Ezekiel Stringer. The post office was established in 1875 and was called Mt. Zion. Mr. House was the first Postmaster The first school was established in 1853 and was taught by Ezekiel Stringer. The School district was created by Act of Legislature on February 15, 1897. Colman Brown built the first store in 1889.
