Established in the mid 1800's

Even after more than 100 settlers called Sylvania home, the town wasn't officially incorporated until October 10, 1967.

The post office was established in November, 1893.

Some of the first families to settle in the area were:  Duncan, Smith, Stone, DeShield, Worman, Reeve, Bethune, Mitchell, Crawford, Tolbert, Shepard, and Culver.  It is thought that there were many Cherokee Indians were forced west to Sand Mountain during the early years of the town.

Jim Duncan helped shape the community in the mid 1800's when he moved to the new town from Sylvania, GA.  The first mayor was Hoyt H. McGullion.

The first doctor was Dr. O.W. Clayton.

The first school was established around 1900, but the elementary/junior high school wasn't build until 1947.  It was burned by fire and the community pulled together to reconstruct it.
